Zoo-ish

I L.O.V.E. going to the Austin Zoo! Mostly because it is less of a stroll through the local Zoo, as it is navigating your way through someone's deserted farm with their chickens and peacocks running loose amongst the empty cages and old tractors. It's hilarious and so awesome!
The first time I entered the Austin Zoo I was completely caught off guard with the random "back-yardy-ness" feel, but now I have come to fully appreciate and embrace its quirkiness. I mean, who needs exotic animals or sturdy cages, when you can have dirt walkways, cardboard, and rusted cages lazily strewn about? :) Have I mentioned it's awesome?
Do you like the "Dawn" logo on the duck's hat? :) Oh my Lanta, I love it.

We were invited by some cute friends and the kids were in heaven. Especailly when we rode the Zoo-ish train:

which takes you past completely faded carboard cutouts of elves and spaceships…I kid you not. But fun for all, nonetheless.

The real highlight of the day was the house cat wandering around. Let me repeat: a cat, just wandering around aimlessly through the zoo--how awesome is that? The kids had a hay day chasing it and petting it…and I'm thinking :

1. Dude, it's a cat.

2. My children are completely animal-starved.

3. Next time we're thinking of going to the Zoo-ish, we should borrow someone's cat (or a dog would do, in a pinch) instead and let it roam in our backyard (and maybe charge a nominal fee to other neighborhood kids who would like to come the "zoo." Shout out Kristen!) I'm not afraid!

Um, your description of the Austin zoo not only has me laughing so hard I'm about to wet my pants, but is as true as true gets! Every time we go there I just shake my head and feel completely amused, or confused, or something. Hello? This is AUSTIN, and THIS is your ZOO?? huh? My kids do like it a lot, though. Make sure you visit the San Antonio zoo, if you haven't already. It's awesome.

You're so freakin hilarious Kristi.

Who needs the zoo when you can have a house cat?

Kristi--you are hilarious!I love you man! But I have to whole heartily agree with you about that place...it's "Austin Weird"...I love the bird there that copies everything you say...and as for the cat...I was thinking...eww! That cat has been walking all over creation, and all over and through all of these animals poop...don't touch the cat kids!!! You'll get sick and die!!!

Fun place though.

I love that you call it Zoo-ish. I think you have just given me another reason to move to Austin.

That is freaking hilarious! Dude-next time I come to Texas, I want to go to the zoo! That sounds right up there with the outlet mall in my opinion! That's awesome!

LOVE that. Um...isn't a cat roaming freely around a zoo more "dinner" than anything else? I guess it learned to stay away from the mean meat-eaters pretty quick.
love the pics of the kids...and love your gutts:)

i guess since i'm forced to go to the zoo every year,(for a field trip) in the hot summer & i don't have kids, i just don't have the appreciation for zoos. and i surely hate cats!

After living by the Ft. Worth zoo, the Boise zoo was a disappointment for us. After your explanation of Austin's "Zoo-ish" I guess the Boise Zoo sounds like heaven on earth. Too funny.

You are hilarious Kristi. I loved your description of the zoo. I haven't been to the zoo in forever it seems. Looks like you had a blast.
