We decided to go camping at Nolan's parent's Ranch in Smithville Friday night just for fun. We had SO much fun. It felt like a mini-vacation (which camping doesn't ever really feel like that) but it was nice.
I was a little nervous because the dadgum heat and humidity is horrendous (a little alliteration). However, they just purchased a camping trailer and it had glorious air conditioning (at full blast), which was heaven. The kids love going out there to see the Longhorns. They have two new baby calves and they are adorable. Braden kept yelling, "Boo Cows, Boo!" Then he would throw dirt at them and laugh maniacally. He is such a goofball. Brinley was really sca
red of the big cows, but she loves the babies. She constantly tried to touch the baby calves, but they would just run away. Poor girl! She acted like such a teenager, though, because she would look at the huge cows tartly, and say, "I don't have any food, cows. I'm serious. See?"
Braden was the only one of us brave enough to hand feed the cows. I'm sorry, but their slimy tongues stick out like snakes--there was no way it was touching my hand. Braden would also throw cattle feed at them and yell, "Catch!" and then congratulate himself with a pull down of his fist and a "Yes!"
I made a new discovery about cows that I find puzzling. Why do they poop where they eat? Doesn't that seem like a conflict of interest? Or an oxymoron? My Dad always had a saying about pooping where you ate, and I wish I could remember it. He's always got funny sayings like that...Moving on...

The locusts (I think that's what they were) were SO loud at night. It must have been mating season. Nolan and I had to lierally yell to each other at night just to be able to talk. Brinley kept covering her ears, she was a little frightened of the noise.
I discovered something else about Texas last night, you might be interested to know. There are spiders the size of rats or tiny dogs, like Chiuauas. I'm serious. They build these huge webs right in between the trees--where you walk--and I'm pretty sure they could squeeze a small child (like Braden) in their belly. (It reminded me of Hayley's roommate... :)

Anyway, we had fun, got super stinky, and are thankful for indoor plumbing)

That spider is the freakiest thing I've ever seen. I remember gigantic webs in Kentucky the trees were just full of them. I never did see the spider that went with them. Love your kids with the cow pictures. They are so cute and funny. Glad you got to have a little get away.
that spider is freaky!!! oh my scary. last night, i had a cricket haunting me as i was trying to fall asleep. can nature not figure out that i like quiet time to go to bed? geez louise! fun weekend with the kids though. i was wondering where you were, with not posting and all. glad you had fun! braden's funny. kids are goofballs, its fun to sit back and just enjoy their oddness sometimes.
THank you for posting a worse spider than the one Hayley found in my house. And, I agree with you on the indoor plumbing thing! I love coming home to my toilet and shower and sinks. Oh the little joys in life really do add up!
so kristi, was your spider growling? mine was, although holly will deny it. i told my students (yes, i showed them the picture!) that it was growling & they believed me. hahah!!!
It's didn't growl, but it did say, "hello" which I found very odd. It truly was the size of my palm...it was just not natural and wrong in every way.
Scary spider! That just gave me the shivers. I'm so NOT a spider person. I would rather move out of my apartment then deal with a scary creepy spider. EW!!!! Fun pictures of your kids though.
What a fun little trip. Camping with an A/C camper is THE way to go. Don't like the spider though. Amen to the indoor plumbing!
you are so good, kristi. i have to make sure chris doesn't find out about this, or he'll expect it from me!
Such cute kids and pictures! They always say that camping is relaxing but really with the lack of sleep, it's not really. Ewe, yucky spider!I hate them.
I didn't know you went camping last weekend, how fun. Its nice they have a camper there now. the pictures are so cute of the kids. mom
